(বিরাম চিহ্ন)  Punctuation Mark বিরাম চিহ্ন কাকে বলে বিরাম চিহ্নের ব্যবহার বিরাম চিহ্ন ব্যবহারের নিয়ম বিরাম চিহ্ন কেন ব্যবহৃত হয়।

মনের ভাব ভাষাতে সুস্পষ্টভাবে ব্যক্ত করার জন্য বাক্যের মধ্যে বা শেষে বিশেষ কিছু চিহ্ন ব্যবহার করা হয়। এ চিহ্নসমূহকে  Punctuation Mark বা বিরামচিহ্ন বলে।  অথবা, বাক্যের অর্থ স্পষ্ট করতে বাক্যের মধ্যে কোথায় কতটুকু বিরাম আবশ্যক তা দেখানোর কলা-কৌশলকে বিরাম চিহ্ন বলে।

Comma (,)

Comma  স্বল্প বিরতি নির্দেশ করে।  সাধারণতঃ এক (১) গণনা  করতে যে সময় লাগে, Comma ’র  বিরতি কাল ততটুকু। বক্তার বক্তব্য সুষ্পষ্ট করতে Comma বিশেষ ভূমিকা পালন করে। সঠিক স্থানে  Comma ব্যবহার না করলে অর্থের  তারতম্য ঘটে। এমনকি বক্তব্যের  উদ্দেশ্য ব্যহত হয়। যেমন- এখানে থাকবেন না, থাকলে বিপদ হবে। এখানে থাকবেন, না থাকলে বিপদ হবে।  নিচে উল্লেখিত ক্ষেত্রে Comma বসে-

i)  দুইয়ের অধিক সমজাতীয় word, phrase বা Clause পাশাপাশি ব্যবহূত হলে প্রত্যেকটির পর  Comma (,) বসে এবং শেষ শব্দের পূর্বে and বসে।

Raju, Robin, Habib and Tushar are going to school.

There are trees, bushes and flowers in the garden.  

He lost land, money, reputation and friends.

Note: and এর আগে  Comma বসে না।

ii)However, Moreover, therefore, As a result, Consequently, On the other hand, In the same time, Yet, Still, Otherwise, So,  ইত্যাদি Adverb গুলোর পর  Comma বসে।

So, he is a good person.  However, he is a nice man.

On the other hand, Rahul is a thief.    

After all, he is happy.

উপর্যুক্ত Adverb গুলোর বাক্যের মাঝে ব্যবহূত হলে এদের আগে ও পরে  Comma বসে।

He, however, is a nice man.  He is, therefore, happy here.

I, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to grant me 5 days’  leave of absence in advance.

iii) বাক্যের প্রথমে Adverial clause  থাকলে  তারপরে comma বসে। 

If you work hard, you will pass in the exam.

Because of his honesty, he was praised by all.

iv) একই  Word and দ্বারা যুক্ত না করে পুনরুক্ত করতে চাইলে  প্রথমে comma বসাতে হয়।

What is lost, lost it will never come back.

v) Absolute phrase বা clause কে আলাদা রাখার জন্য উভয় পাশে  comma ব্যবহূত হয়।

This boy, to be truthful, is an honest boy.

vi) Nominative Absolute ’র পর—

The sun had set, and we reached home.

vii) একাধিক noun/adjective clause করতে-

I do not know where he is, when he will come and what his condition is.

viii) Reporting verb’র পর/Direct Speech-এর আগে Comma বসে।

 He says, “I am ill.”

ix) (a) তারিখ ও সন/সাল পাশাপাশি  থাকলে তারিখের পর কমা (,) বসে ।
