Have you ever asked yourself: What makes native speakers sound so...native?

Lots of English learners know a good level of English, but they don't sound natural.

They know lots of grammar. They have passed English exams. They have studied pronunciation and vocabulary.

So why is it that when they speak, they don't sound natural?

The answer:

COLLOCATIONS

Seriously, this will blow your mind, and transform your English:

Collocations are word combinations that simply sound just right to native speakers.
They are two or more words that are often found together and sound correct.

This is a really important point - there may be other words available that will make sense, but collocations are the word combinations that sound truly perfect in the mind of a native speaker.

Look at this example:

He lost his job due to a budget cut.

He lost his job due to a budget reduction.

Both budget cut and budget reduction make sense, but only budget cut sounds really natural.

Now, I have some bad news, and some good news. I think we'll start with the bad news, to get it out of the way:

There are LOADS of collocations, and you have to learn them one by one. Many students have no structure to their learning, and end up studying them inefficiently, in a boring way. This means that they make little progress, and lose motivation
